Message for Santa Last Week
A friend sent me a link to a website. Once there, I filled in a few details, and was sent a link to a video from Santa, personalised with the details I provided. We set it up for Cheeky without her knowing, and when she watched the video (sent as an email from Santa) her reaction was nothing short of wonderful - her eyes were wide, her mouth wider, and she was so amazed at how Santa knew things about her...
I'm enclosing the link I was sent. Obviously the usual BBC warnings about not being responsible for external websites apply, and it is the parents' responsibility to check the site themselves - but I think it is wonderful!

If you have young children, or know someone who does, I think this is well worth a look!

MERRY CHRISTMAS Last Week
It's about that time again...
It's been quite a busy year, for me, my family, and my friends. Most of us have been through a fair few ups and downs over the past twelve months. What I have noticed is that, fairly consistently, the times I spend on Hootoo can be classed as "ups". As I have done in the past, I'd like to say a big thank you for all the friendship, fun, sympathy, laughter and overall silliness you all help bring.
I send you all my best wishes and my hopes for a happy Christmas and good fortune in 2010!
And now... if you would... please follow this link:

Hmph! 2 Weeks Ago
I was in town at lunch, trying to get presents for The Missus. She'd written out a list.
I had tried yesterday, but on opening the list, found it saying "Potatoes, suet, milk..."
Damn, wrong list!!
I brought the right list today, and found myself in one shop, looking for a specific perfume and body lotion. As I was searching, a young female assistant with about an inch of makeup trowelled onto her face asked if I needed help.
I mentioned that I was looking for a certain perfume, and was told this was the place to buy it.
She said some strange word, followed by the name of the perfume.
"Pardon?"
Again, she repeated the strange word, then the name. She pointed to a shelf. Ahh. This *could* be the perfume I've been sent for... but I'm not sure. I wasn't going to risk it.
"You could always take a tester home," she said, spraying a bit onto some paper, "Then she could try it - or he could..."
I took the tester and left.
I mentioned this in the office at work, to much hilarity. One secretary said "Don't worry, you *look* married!"
"Err... I'm not sure how to take that... I *look* married??"
At which point, all the secretaries joined in -
"Downtrodden"
"Grey"
"Balding"
"Stress lines"
"Worn out"
Thanks...

A New Addition... 5 Weeks Ago
I decided a while ago that I no longer wished to be woken up in the middle of the night by a baby crying for food, needing a nappy change, or throwing up on my back as I'm about to go out. As a result I had a vasectomy. That was 8 years ago.
Today I am reeling in shock, as The Missus has just informed me that this "fun" is about to be repeated - with one slight twist - it will be my 13 year old daughter calling herself "Mum"!
Yes, it was a bit of a shock for me, too.
The baby arrives tonight, but fortunately we can give it back on Monday.
Meet Cyber Baby!
Kitty is being given one of those "lifelike" electronic babies that is supposed to teach kids that bringing a child into the world is a lot more responsibility than they might at first realise. I don't know a lot about them, but apparently I'm going to be finding out over this weekend. And I'm blowed if I'm going to be getting up to feed the little brat! I've done my bit. I look upon this partly as a very valuable lesson for Kitty, and partly as revenge for all the nights she had me up for hours on end! I hope the baby gets wind!!
I'll keep you posted...

Autumn Drive Oct 29, 2009
It was one of those lovely mornings for a drive today. Usually my commute is four miles, which I do on my bike. It's a main road through a built up area, and is the usual nose-to-tail crawl into the city. There is an on-road cycle lane, which means I can make the trip in 20 minutes, rather than about 45 if I use the car.
Today, however, I am at the virus lab, which is situated 12 miles away, on the edge of the countryside. Before the urban sprawl of the 20th century, this was an isolation hospital, for suffererers of infectious diseases. Now the city has just about reached it. However, my route skirts the city, and takes me through the countryside first.
This morning was beautiful, a real crisp, autumn day. As I left the city, there was mist hanging low over the fields. There is an estate with several high rise flats on the edge of the city which gave a curious effect, as all that could be seen of it was the top floors, appearing out of the mist, with no sign of the city around them. The trees on the way showed a wonderful mix of autumnal colours, everything from the last of the rich green leaves, through golden yellows to deep flame reds - if there had been a breeze, it would have looked like the trees were on fire! It's the school holiday this week, which means the road was much quieter than normal, so with a near empty road, my music on the stereo, and one of those wonderful mornings that make you feel glad to be alive, it was something of a disappointment when I arrived at work. A small compensation was seeing a squirrel and several rabbits hoppping about the lawn as I walked in from the car-park...
