ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 12th August 2002
Welcome to the Personal Space of Mat Lindsay
"Send back Earth's gods to their haunts on unknown Kadath, and pray to all space that you may never meet me in my thousand other forms. Farewell, Randolph Carter, and beware; for I am Nylarthotep, the crawling chaos."

HP Lovecraft "Through the gates of the Silver Key"

Don't let the quote put you off, I'm a nice guy really...no really.

As you might gather from that I'm a definite admirer of Lovecraft and his tales of the things that mankind was not mean't to know. In fact literature of all kinds could be said to be my most central passion in life. I adore the following writers: HG Wells, Stephen Dobyns, Edgar Allen Poe, Poppy Z Brite, David Gemmell, Graham Masterton, JRR Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Anne Rice, Robert Harris, Katherine Kerr, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and of course the great Lovecraft himself.

I also happen to be a long time fan of pro-wrestling and champion in particular: Kanyon, Rey Mysterio Junior, Eddie Gurrero, Roddy Piper, Ultimo Dragon, Keiji Muto and the incomperable Raven.

After the love of my life (i.e. my partner) my life revolves around movies (Seven Samurai, The Lord of the Rings, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Highlander, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, etc) and music (Pearl Jam, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Rival Schools, Hundred Reasons, Korn, Deftones, Taproot, System of a Down, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, NOFX, The Descendants, Live, Faith No More, Hell is for Heroes, Audioslave, etc).

I have also been roleplaying for the best part of the last fifteen years using such systems as D&D (2nd & 3rd Ed), WHFRP, World of Darkness and Call of Cthulu both as a GM and player.

As for myself, what is there to say? I'm a twenty-something guy from the friendly north of England who graduated from uni with a degree in english and now tries to hold down a responsible day job whilst writing in his spare time and trying in vein to keep up with all his own interests.

And I now have a three-legged cat called Jester...life is stranger than fiction.

(Brought to you by the kind sponsorship of Ratcrap's 24 Hour Crematorium & Rendering Plant: "You kill 'em, we grill 'em.")

Curt Hennig, R.I.P.
Feb 20, 2003

A few days ago the verteran pro-wrestler Curt Hennig was found dead in his hotel room after he failed to rendevous with his fellow NWA:TNA employees. At the time of writing I am unaware of the actual cause of Hennig's death and can only offer my condolences to his loved ones and thank him for the contribution he made to the industry through the past three decades.

Known as "Mr Perfect" in the WWE, Hennig wrestled both there and in the now defunct WCW as well as on the independant circuit where he earned a reputation as a sound technical worker. Perhaps his highest accolade was lifting the WWE Intercontinental title which he defended with a swaggering style.

So long Kurt, good luck in the next life.

A World of Darkness
Jan 31, 2003

Are there any other World of Darkness players or storytellers out there in the barren lands of H2G2? I'm going to start rambling on about my experiences as a player and storyteller in my journal and I'm sure there are others that want to recount their past glories as well.

Whether you favour Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascention, Wraith: The Oblivion, Changeling: The Dreaming, Hunter: The Reckoning, Exhalted or even Mummy please feel free to share your experiences and wisdom.

Eamon Homes: Why?
Jan 22, 2003

Every morning when the alarm clock has failed to wake me up sufficiently my partner switches on the tv and (post the demise of Channel 4's RI:SE) presents me with the daily menu of reactionary drivel being served up on GM:TV. Each day I am ever more amazed by the ill-informed rabble rousing the programme indulges in, but the thing that always stands out is the presence of one man. Moving steadily into middle-age and glorying in his beloved Manchester United, Eamon Homes has finally managed to get my back up far more than usual. I don't know if any other researchers have been watching the cursed programme over the past two days, but for some reason the subject of insectivores was raised on the show that went out on the morning of 21/01/2003. It seems that when his broadcast colleague Phiona Philips mentioned the mammals known as the ant-eater and the aardvark, Mr Homes casually commented to the effect that both creatures were in fact one and the same. Ms Philips objected to this saying that they were different in response to which Mr Homes maintained the opposite citing the fact that an aardvark ate ants as the evidence for his argument. As is the nature of the programme this was jumped upon as a chance to throw the issue open to all and sundry and thus today the matter was of great importance on the show. Many people had contacted the programme to argue that Ms Philips was correct one person pointing out that the two creatures originate on different continents. Eventually the weight of an expert was brought in in the shape of a Dr Morris of the Natural History Museum. Dr Morris was seen to be standing in front of a cabinet containing a stuffed ant-eater and at one point footage was also shown of a likewise stuffed aardvark in order to illustrate the difference between the two. Dr Morris pointed out that the two creatures are distinctly different, the aardvark more resembling a pig than an ant-eater in physiology. To this Mr Homes requested that Dr Morris confirm his credentials; Dr Morris explained that he was a professor of zoology specialising mammilian life (more than qualifying him to comment on the subject). After this Mr Homes gripped the lapels of his jacket in what he called a "Kavannagh Q.C." posture and proceeded to question Dr Morris in a poor impersonation of a barrister in court with a witness. He then proceeded to ask Dr Morris to confirm whether or not an aardvark ate ants, to which the doctor of course replied that they do. On the strength of this Mr Homes concluded that he had won the argument and an aardvark was after all an ant-eater, he went on to comment that no jury in the land could have ruled against him in this conclusion. What Mr Homes failed to grasp was the fact that while an aardvark is undoubtably an insectivore whose diet comprises almost exclusivly of ants it is still classified as an aardvark in the English language as it was encountered by western zoology on the South American continent long after another insectivore native to the African continent had been classified as the ant-eater due to its eating habits.

My point is this: why is a person so unnable to grasp the logic of a situation and formulate a coherant argument paid so much to appear on television and spout babble?

Please tell me?

A Question of Character: Fondly Remembered Roleplaying Characters
Jan 4, 2003

I began roleplaying a good few years ago now, but I can still remember the first character that I played very well. The setting was the D&D 2nd Ed version of Ravenloft and the character was a Sylvan Elf Ranger known as Tollarion Redswift who travelled the domain of dread in the company of a stalwart Dwarven battle-rager known as Heimdal the Swift (it was "the Furious," but then he found some boots of speed). Anyone else have fond memories of their first, or indeed any character they've played over the years?
