How do you solve a problem like h2g2? 2 Days Ago
That's possibly a bit of a contentious title. Still, I'm going to use this journal to document any ideas that I have that I think would help h2g2. If anyone else wants to join in, feel free. A lot of these are unlikely to happen as the changes it would mean on the back end are insurmountable.
---------------
1. Amend my ACE welcome message to emphasise the importance of the Guide, PR etc. so that newcomers are drawn to the Guide.
This will hopefully both get more people writing and contributing, but also make it easier for newcomers to have something to focus on and make it more likely that they stick around.
Done.

2. Make everyone able to pass the ownership of an Entry they created to another Researcher. This would mean that there wouldn't be the problem of having an Edited and a non-Edited version of everything all the time. Possibly it would have a 'Page created by' box so that the original author would be credited.
---------------
3. To make non-Edited Entries that haven't been posted to in a set time period (say a year?) to become dormant and not come up in standard searches. There would need to be an 'Include Dormant Entries' box. I would extend that to the Friend search too.

This place will drive me nuts. 4 Weeks Ago
I've just asked our maintainance department to come and remove the arms from my office chair so I can have something approaching correct posture at my desk. It requires an allen key and about five minutes.
They won't do it, because apparently they can't alter anything away from the manufacturer's specifications. The arms are *optional*. Yet because they person before me chose to have arms, they are recommending that we buy a new chair. Seriously.
Thankfully I appear to have got a chap to come up and have a look. Fingers crossed he'll bring an allen key.

Damn. Oct 13, 2009
I managed to spoil a perfectly good tile bag by attempting to put in eyelets. Turns out the hole it punches somehow is bigger than the eyelets that come with it. Ah well. I'll just have to stitch them up by hand. Bummer.

You know it's cold when you have to wear a woollen hat at your desk.

A Shrewsbury meet Sep 30, 2009
A few of you have expressed an interest in coming to Shrewsbury for a meet at various points since I moved here, so this evening I thought I'd finally do so.
The general plan is for me to take you on a tour of Shrewsbury, and then of its drinking establishments.
