* I Love Cats Magazine PAY: $25 - $75 Interested in new ideas for I Love Cats and request that you either send a paragraph or two about your idea or the finished piece. When using the postal service, ALWAYS include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a return address. I do not want poetry (as I seldom publish it) but I am interested in feature stories about cats and their owners, (no talking cats, please), interesting or odd happenings with cats, tips for cat owners, health issues, nonfiction pieces, behavior problems, that sort of thing. Please do not send stories about cats that go or live outdoors. I'm looking for a story--preferably with photos or drawings--that is 1,000 words, tops, ideally 500-800 words. I buy all rights, since we copyright all stories. http://www.iluvcats.com/writguidfori.html

getting published Feb 9, 2005
I've been seeing this question, in many different forums. It seems to be a mystery-there are books, web sites and clubs devoted to it. I need to make an entry on the subject, but here's a quick answer:
1.Check spelling, punctuation, grammar.
2.Check the guidelines. Go to the magazine web site or write the editor and ask for them. If possible, read what they have published. Then follow those guidelines!! Each mag editor wants something different, and each thinks that you should already know this information. Don't assume a book or website can give you one over-all, fool-proof format for submitting.
3.Have something to say. Many stories are done too often, and become cliche. Alsomst every writing club has links to a list of cliches for each Genre. Unless you have a totally new take on an overused subject, don't go there.
Here are a few web sites that can help.
http://www.ralan.com/ Excellent writers' resource. See the menu for writing help. Also great for markets.
http://writerbuddy.com/ great writing club
the bbc has one, as well, called get writing http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/getwriting/
4. Keep submitting! For every story placed you can expect quite a few rejections. Don't give up!
5. Don't spend an arm or a leg buying books when you can get better advice from friends in a club or get it off web sites. And remember, don't pay anyone to publish your work.
There are several levels of paying markets, and some that are for the love of markets: basically, you don't get paid, but you do get in print or on line, with a byline. Make the choice and know the site or publisher before you let them have your work. Remember, fewer sites or mags will take a reprint, and the money earned by a reprint is often a fraction paid for an original work. Also, many contests are for unpublished authors. If you get posted on a site that gives you a writing credit and little else, you are considered published, and are no longer eligible for these contests. So, look before you submit.

stress test Dec 13, 2002
Took mom in for 2 chemical stress tests and an echocardiogram this week. She was wiped out afterward. They found the heart valve that isn't closing properly...will find out next week what they're gonna do about it. She gets another blood test tomorrow. While we were waiting in the doctor's office Mom and I talked about all kinds of things; reminiscing about some of the things my Dad and her went through. We got to laughing. So, there we were, sitting in the heart specialist's lobby, giggling like school girls. The other patients were staring. I wish people would lighten up; worrying and looking grim isn't gonna make you feel better. Laughing actually helps your health and takes your mind off of your troubles. On another front, the kids are almost out for their holidays. Yay!

Mom's been sick for a while, so I bullied her into going to a doctor. Turns out she's got a heart condition. We're on top of it, but I'm running my off taking her to a doctor and then to get meds and to get blood tests. Gearing up for thanksgiving, and working on school stuff has me hopping. I'm not online much. Feeling o.k., and upbeat now.
