ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 16th March 2001
I am the Englishman who went up a hill and came down with all the bananas.

Hello, I'm me[Andy]g, and you seem to be called Unknown Visitor - interesting. Welcome to my personal space. I used to have no brackets, but other people around here seem to, so I decided to join in. Especially since Joe asked me to become a MathEd at the h2g2 Mathematical Institute... well, I couldn't help it after that! smiley So I guess that's why I'm here! Well, okay. I have to say a huge thanks to J'au-æmne as well hug

I thought it was about time to write something more realistic than what was here before. So with that in mind, I thought that I could direct you to my website - the first time I've been able (with some help) to design a web page that actually looks any good! winkeye

Am I supposed to say something about what I'm interested in? I suppose that comes down to three (maybe four) things. Music, maths, computers and sport. In that order. Thankfully.

You could go and look at what I studied for my first degree at the University of Durham if you're really that interested... and good luck understanding any of it... if you're really interested in maths... well, I'm a MathEd and a RMG, so talk to me and I'll see what you can do at the Maths Institute and the Maths Lab. smiley

And to continue a theme - this is what I studied last year.smiley

Yes, I'm an eternal student. I'm now studying plate tectonics and mantle convection models in the Earth Sciences department at the University of Leeds. One day I might even get out of higher education and go and find a proper job.

Anything else I can say? Well... ((1*6)+9+0+6)*2 = 42, if you care about that sort of thing. And just to show off - (1*6*9)+0-(6*2) = 42 also. But apart from that, my mind is blank. Come back another time and I'm sure it'll be even more interesting. winkeye

Ooh.. no... I thought of another one: (1*6)+(9*0)+(6^2)=42. Excellent. smiley And then there's (-1+6)*9+0-(6/2)=42 - is that one allowed? And ((-1+6+9)*(0+6))/2=42 - hmm, do I win a prize for the most... ? erm

A clever gadget - .

Have a look at my edited entries on Countdown, Delirious? and Evariste Galois.

I've become a Thingite! "Thingite Scanner of Subterranean Surfaces" to be more precise. I proudly believe T****day should be renamed "Thing" immediately!

Oh, and I play chess at h2g2's Chess Club, and I'm in the h2g2 Celebdaq league too.

JOURNAL
Surprise!
Jun 12, 2003

... I haven't made a journal entry for so long, so I thought I would now. Even though I've not really got anything interesting to say.

What can I say?

Well... I guess I can say that I'm well settled into the routine that's been happening for the last 6 months or so since I started working here in the department of Earth Sciences at Leeds University... it's kind of weird to be here during the week and then in Manchester (smiley hug love ) at weekends but I'm getting used to having two different "homes" at the moment!

I told you it wouldn't be that interesting. Oh well. Maybe I'll remember to post here when something interesting does happen, you never know.

Only a few weeks until the Summer Party meet! smiley biggrin Looking forward to seeing people there again! smiley And maybe demonstrating my great rounders skill (?) again. smiley

An Englishman in Dublin
Jun 18, 2002

Ought to have said this earlier... completely passed my mind before now... smiley

I was in Dublin when the Ireland vs. Germany match in the World Cup was taking place. It was such a bizarre experience being so drawn to a team by being in a pub during the match... and not just me, all the people I was with were too... and then the way the match ended - a last-minute equaliser - that was special. I've never seen a replayed goal celebrated so vociferously!! My friends and I became honorarily Irish for a couple of hours, even buying daft Irish memorabilia to celebrate the occasion!

Needless to say, I'm glad we weren't there when they lost on penalties to Spain! winkeye

Another day, another interview...
Mar 18, 2002

I don't know why, but I like interviews... smiley

I had another reasonably successful one last Tuesday. I was half-asleep during most of the interview day, and yet still got half-offered a possible 3 studentships... erm

We shall have to see how things develop over the coming months. Maybe something or somewhere else will grab my attention during that time, who knows? smiley

Christmas
Dec 23, 2001

Ah... a time to relax, and see my family for the first time in a while. smiley It makes me think how lucky I am to have them when so many other people either have no family or don't get on with their family at Christmastime. So if any of you are feeling down this Christmas - I do feel for you, and hope that it'll get better for you. Leave me a message or something if you want to talk about it... smiley

Godspell
Nov 14, 2001

Here we go then....

After a month's practising of cheesy guitar solos and chords, it's finally almost time to perform. Godspell (a musical based on St Matthew's Gospel) is taking place right here, right now! Dress rehearsal tonight - performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It's gonna be good...
