ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 23rd January 2001
Shanana's Cabana for All Bananas

I'm back. I know you missed me, I know I missed you. So we're back together.

I'm 20 years old and living in Edinburgh, though neither Scottish nor convinced that I'm really in Edinburgh. Most recently from Alaska, I'm from nowhere. You know you're intrigued!

Studying theology at the Free Church College, I am an anomaly: an Evangelical Lutheran Woman studying at an all-male Reformed Seminary and having no desire to become a member of the clergy. So don't ask.

I hope to get active again. I'm sorry we were separated for so long. Forgive me?

I do recommend my blog

And the Free Church of Scotland website

And the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod website

I am a member of the Living Earth Society. Check it out, read of my amazing Earthquake experiences and of other people's near-misses with nature!

Am also a member of the Northwest US Researchers Group, because the PacNW is the most amazing place *ever*. So there.

JOURNAL
Vile Weather
May 23, 2002

What is wrong with this picture: the high temperature int he United States for nearly a whole week was recorded not in Death Valley, CA, but in various parts of Alaska. Temperatures of 83* were recorded in Anchorage, and in Delta Junction, it was even hotter. It's wrong, wrong, wrong. It's still springtime, dammit, and I'd appreciate Mother Nature to be obliging. I don't even have to put up with such temperatures in the summer up here, so why would I like it in the spring?

Fortunately, it cooled back down to about the mid-60s today, but I'm still hurt that Nature could be so cruel. The warmth along with the small snowfall (ignore our record-setting snowfall in March, as it still didn't bring us up to average) has allowed for a rather bad fire season, so we've over a dozen fires burning in the state as I type. Firefighters from down south aren't coming up, and ours won't be going down, which could be a bad thing for both sets. Anyhow, if you're in AK this summer, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT use fireworks or leave your fire unattended or burn *ANYTHING* near *ANY* foliage.

I'm done.

Spring
May 18, 2002

Yes, I've been a little scummy twerp in keeping up with my journal. My seasonal thing sort of died out after I skipped break-up. So we're in our terribly short little spring and all is well. I saw my first flowers springing up the other day, and since Memorial Day is quickly approaching (along with the end of school, graduation, and numerous other niceties), I know I'll be seeing lots more.

Work on the house is stalling somewhat, as Mum switched contractors, and this one won't bring out generators for electricity. So ground-breaking is going to be Mid-June, now. We'll be moved in by mid-October, hopefully, and Mum will be retired from the Air Force (FINALLY!). She'll probably get a nursing job on the outside, either teaching or managing, so she'll be happier and less stressed.

Aside from that, I'm just counting down the days left in school... 14 at the moment...

Winter
Oct 20, 2001

As my last journal entry was appropriately named summer, I've gone on to carry on that tradition. No, there is no fall. And I'm not stupid, it's just that it doesn't exist. No, really, it doesn't. If you don't believe me, come to Alaska sometime, and we'll talk. Come in September/October and you'll understand without the talking.

Ok, back on topic. Winter is here with a vengeance and I have fallen deeply in love with it, yet again. There is already enough snow on the mountain for skiing and nearly enough on the ground for X-country skiing. Sledding is back in full force and Phantom is romping through the fields with reckless abandon. He and I both are loving it. The crunch of the snow unerfoot or the plopping of the masses of nearly-ice that fall from the trees are my favourite sounds, and the smell of the fresh, coolness of the air is unparalleled.

I still can't believe I get to live in this euphoria for another 7 months!!!
