JOURNAL
Old Age

This year's journal entry is on the depressing subject of old age. senior

I have really started to feel old this year. sadface

I have been old for many years of course but I used to think I am not old people yet.run

And yet when I think about it, I can't think why anything is different than in previous years I still have my arms and legs and eyes and most of my teeth. ok

Perhaps it is all this recession nonsense as it reminds me of how I have been there done that and wiped the vomit up with the T shirt 30 years ago and this one is nowhere near as bad yet. tea

Furby's Ideas For The New Bank Holidays In England
Jan 6, 2008

In England we have fewer Bank Holidays than most of Europe (we have 8) and there have been discussions about introducing extra Bank Holidays.

This is my idea.

We should revert to the dates of the Pagan festivals of Solstices, Equinoxes and cross quarter days. Not because the Pagan religions were any more sensible than our modern God ones , but because the festival dates are evenly spread throughout the year and are based on the dates of where the Sun is, and the Sun shines down on all of us, regardless of whether we believe in Sky Gods or Fairies or not.

rose So in England we now have these Bank Holidays
1 - 1st Jan - New Year's Day
2+3 - Good Friday and Easter Monday , sometime in March or April depending on the moon
4 - 1st Monday in May - May Day
5 - Last Monday in May - Spring Bank Holiday
6 - Last Monday in August - August Bank Holiday
7+8 - Christmas Day 25th Dec, and Boxing Day 26th Dec

earth The Pagan days based on the Sun are
Feb 1 - Candlemas (Lamb day)
Mar 21 - Spring Equinox (Easter)
May 1 - May Day (Dancing round the maypole day)
Jun 21 - Summer Solstice (Midsummer's night)
Aug 1 - Lammas (Bread Day)
Sep 21 - Autumn Equinox (Harvest Festival)
Nov 1 - All Souls Day (Halloween is the day before)
Dec 21 - Winter Solstice (Yule)

So I would suggest keeping the 2 day holidays at Christmas and Easter , as the people would be revolting otherwise, and England is still a Christian country officially. I would also keep Jan 1st as it was introduced because too many workers had hangovers. I would then move some of the other Bank holidays slightly, and introduce three extra days. The Bank Holidays would be on whatever days they fell upon, not always on a Monday.

My new plan would be
1 hangover Jan 1st - Keep New Year's Day although it does not fit this plan, as too many workers would have hangovers.
2 sheep Feb 1st - Lamb Day - New Bank Holday
3+4 chick bunny Good Friday and Easter Monday, leave Easter as it is approx near the Spring Equinox
5 diva May 1st - Keep May Day
6 cupid Jun 21 - Midsummer's Day - Move the Spring Bank Holiday forward 3 weeks to the Summer Solstice as it is too close to the holiday at the start of May
7 burger Aug 1 - Bread Day - Move the August Bank Holiday back to the 1st August where it used to be until the 1960s and still is in Scotland
8 toffeeapple Sep 21 - Harvest Festival - New Bank Holiday for Autumn Equinox
9 ghost Nov 1 - Ghost Day - New Bank Holiday for All Souls Day
10+11 holly gift Dec 25 and Dec 26 - leave Christmas Day and Boxing Day as they are approx near the Winter Solstice

I don't suppose the government will go with a plan anywhere near as sensible as mine though.

I found a web page (not on this site - it is somewhere else) which appears to be a copy of my Sooty wizard Sweep dog and Soo panda article except it has been changed from the third person to the second person.

The information is all available in books and videos and older people's brains so I suppose it is just possible that someone arrived at an almost identical article to mine.

I wrote the bit about Sooty being homesick and the tram ride and episodes being filmed in Heaton Park, Prestwich just from what is my brain, it seems to be an Australian website, and so I doubt they would know or care where Heaton Park even is. wah

Anyway, just in case anyone else finds it and thinks *I* did the copying, I didn't. sadface

I don't know what to think really.

I think "well obviously" but then hardly anyone else seems to think so.

It happens quite a lot to me really. sadface

There is a feature on the main BBCi page http://www.bbc.co.uk for "Popular searches right now are".

Sometimes the combination of things people are searching on is bizarre.
