ABOUT THIS RESEARCHER

Created: 24th July 2000
A moment of silence

In memory of a wonderful man and brilliant author, a man who touched the lives of most of the people on this site -:

DOUGLAS NOEL ADAMS

DON'T PANIC!

The name Cthulhu comes from H.P. Lovecraft, and I don't care how you pronounce it. I am the King of Balwyniti. I am also the Patron of the Royal h2g2 Procrastinators society, the h2g2 Addiction Clinic and the Ladies of the Octagonal Table. This latter is also a protectorate of the Kingdom of Balwyniti.
I used to be around here quite a bit - in fact, I'm 6th on the all-time list of most and average posts (excluding the Johnny-come-latelys.) But now I'm away without internet access at home; my glory days on this site are behind me. But beware, I'm not gone for good...

Distributed Computing

If you've never heard of this term, never fear, you're probably already familiar with the concept. The basic idea is that you download software agents which take advantage of the excess processing power of your computer to work on various work units which comprise a part of a problem. Millions of people do this, and so in effect act as a worldwide supercomputer which can provide solutions to whatever the problem is many orders of time quicker than a few single though more powerful computers. Probably the most well known of these is SETI@home, where packets of received signals are analysed for evidence of extra-terrestrial life. There is already a h2g2 researchers group, which can be joined here. There are others, however, which have a different aim, and probably (for me, anyway) the most important of these are the medical projects. So far I've found three which seem quite good. They are Folding@home, which is a project working with protein folding, a key component in many diseases including alzheimers. If you decide to contribute please join in h2g2 researchers folding team 2879, set up by silverfish. United Devices is another of the same sort, currently working on such things as cancer research. Again, I have created a team called h2g2team, if you decide to download the UD agent, go here to join my team. The final one I have to tell you about is FightAIDS@home, which is involved in what it says. Again I have set up a team named h2g2team, to join simply download the Entropia agent and in the members settings page specify 'h2g2team' as your team name.

Since I was reading through it and was bored...

JOURNAL
A... journal? Wot's that then?
Nov 25, 2004

It's... been a *little* while since my last journal entry, hasn't it? Naughty naughty! But then, it's been quite a while since I've been around hootoo much... it's scary, so many people here now don't even *know* about Rupert, nevermind the pre-BBC era. But for all that it's not what it once was, it's not exactly morphed into some terrible misformed monster ... ah, there's a smiley I haven't used for too long! biggrin monster monster monster monster So anyway, what's been happening... well, not much winkeye Very very briefly, ellie and I moved out together to somewhere where we didn't have internet access, then we were living seperately for a short while (which was HORRIBLE) until the w**k situation improved, then we found ourselves a great little apartment (not one of those awful modern 'open-plan' apartments which look like excessively neat closets) where we *finally* got internet access back (but only dial-up wah ) and I completed my studies. Well, supposedly finished my studies, until I decided (due to ellie's prompting) to do an Honours year, which will give me a BA (Hons.) instead of just the BA (which I have now, certificate on the wall and everything!). So that's why I've been insanely busy these last few months... read read read study study study, it's been ridiculous... but it's been worth it, I'm studying amazingly interesting stuff (the universalisability of human rights, if you want to know) as well as just plain bloody difficult stuff, like the possibility of knowledge and how to define it, and just what *is* the self anyway? I've come through the first semester on a first-class honours average, and my thesis (10000 words) is progressing okay, even if I get scared at times that what I'm hoping to be able to do, I won't be able to manage. But that's philosophy for you! You always seem to end up making a contribution by asking a question, rather than answering one. So... any questions? winkeye

How long is it? 33 days sir. Thirty-Three days!
May 27, 2003

Or, to put it another way - that's a rather personal question! That's how many days (plus 3 hours 10 minutes) remain until I'm reunited with ellie (U198365), my love <heart>. We've already been apart for 67 days, so it's not much longer now, even if at times it feels like each day is a whole month unto itself. I love her! Okay, so it's not world peace or anything like that, and it's perhaps not terribly important to anyone else, but do I care? Well no, not particularly winkeye

A-Europe we will go
Jan 14, 2003

Yes, that's right, I'm off to Europe for 7 weeks of... erm ... Europeness winkeye Not right at this very second - I don't leave for another 27 hours. Or so. Not that I'm counting. At all. tongueout The (very) rough itinerary is this - arrive in Paris on the 16th. Recuperate for a couple of days. Travel around the south of France and Italy (particularly Venice and Florence) until the end of January. Return to Paris, and then either from the 4thish to the 11thish or the 17thish to the 24thish, travel by train/ferry to/from Finland, via Germany. The rest of the time I'll be in Paris, with possible jaunts off into the more northern French countryside, time and money permitting. Then I fly from Paris to London on the 2nd of March, arriving in at Heathrow around lunchtime, go in to the city itself to meet whoever decides they want to show up, then back to Heathrow that evening for the flight back home. Which gets here just in time for me to theoretically go to uni. I don't know when or even if I'll be able to get online - or will be bothered to actually swing by here winkeye but I'll be contactable by email (at an address I will send everyone I know who might want to contact me winkeye ) I also have a hotmail account (link on my home page http://www.kingcthulhu.net/) which I'll also check, though not as often as the other.

So... have fun without me, because I'll certainly be having fun without you! tongueout

Shootings at Monash University
Oct 21, 2002

Today at Monash University, Clayton Campus in Victoria, Australia. I, happily, wasn't on campus at the time. Details are pretty sketchy at the moment; I shall, of course, keep this up to date. For now, more info at:
