SCUBA diving, Biking and life in General

Welcome and thank you for digging around and finding my page in this ever deepening and turning pool of online informative excess1

SCUBA Diving

Check out www.mvsac.org.uk, especially if you live in the SouthEast of England, in and around Leatherhead, Guildford and Kingston-upon-Thames. Mole Valley Sub Aqua Club :SAA101:, the friendliest divers in the UK, if not the world! And in case you are wondering 69 Diving, Ewell Village is definitely not the best Diving shop there is. Try Mike's Waterfront in Acton, or The couple of Scuba Shops in and around the AquaSport Hotel, Portland. Whilst you are in that part of the country give Paul Pike, the Captain of the best Hardboat in the known Universe a try. The Boat is known as 'Divetime', his Soup is legendary and his web site can be found here

Biking

In both formats, Motor and 'pushy'.

First, Motorbiking: I have recovered from my unfortunate meeting between me and a Fence at Junction 9 of the M25 (if you know the place, come off the M25 anticlockwise, and at the top of the exit ramp there is a 90 degree bend to the left). I didn't make the corner on the 1st of December 1999, highsided it, got flipped over the metal crash barrier and into the four bar fence that runs almost perpendicular to the road at that point. I have had the steel pin removed from the femur and went skiing a week and a half after they had closed the scars up from the removal operation in Feb 2001. I am now burning around South West London and the surrounding area scaring Volvo drivers and my pillion passenger alike on my gorgeous black steel steed... If you want to do a bit of DreamRaven spotting, I drive an L reg Bandit 400, in black, wear black two piece leathers, a black lid (with de rigeur black visor, natch). My distinctive markings are a swooping hawk laid over Full moon motif on the back of my jacket, a celtic 'cult of the head' skull motif on my left sleeve, and a silver, gold and purple Ying Yang at the base of the spine panel of the jacket. Wave if you see me!!

Second, Cycling: I learnt to ride at about the age of six, and have rarely been off a bicycle since. The scar tissue from this endeavour is more numerous, but less obvious than that discussed in the previous paragraph. At this moment in time I do not use the cycle as much as I used to, due to the triangle I exist within concerning work, home and social. But I do cycle quite a bit in and around the North Downs on my newly acquired 'Mountain Bike', not that there are too many mountains round my way. I used to be a hardened road cyclist, and to be brutally honest my 'mountian bike' has been tweaked to keep to that ideal, semi-slick tyres and a road riding position, to start with.

Get a Bike, Get Pedal Pumping and Have some Fun

Life in General

Is Good, the water is wet (and so is the cider!! Newquay Steam if anyone is offering...), the scar tissue is intriguing and everything gets my vote ('cept politicians, religion and the Millenium Dome).

Tattoo plus
May 15, 2000

As of the 29th of May 2000, the tattoo design me and my significant other tried to get produced in Dublin has been simplified and 'branded' on her 'derreir'. It looks good and is quite discreet.

Told you I'd keep you posted

St Patrick's Day, Dublin and U2
Mar 22, 2000

I have just returned from a groovy weekend in the Cool city of Dublin where I went to celebrate my Girlfriend's birthday and to see the Emerald isle for the first time.

Place I stayed: Emorville House Bed & Breakfast (www.tombyrne.com/b+b.html). A good hotel with a lovely landlady, Mrs Philomena Byrne. The first B&B I have stayed in where there isn't really a fixed breakfast time. It isn't too far out of the city centre, just within stumbling distance.

Places I went to: After watching the parade on Friday we stopped into a relatively 'non-tourist' pub where I tried the local brew. It is true that Guiness tastes better over there. I had two pints and I wouldn't be able to even have half over in London. Stella (my better half) didn't agree, but then she drinks white wine, not pints!! smiley . Then after strolling around some more we 'tripped' over Morrisons, which is a hotel bar. We were attracted by the interior design, all black and white leather sofas, twigs in glass vases and candles in beakers, very swish. The majority of the people in there weren't what I would have expected in a similar place in London, all relatively laid back and cool in a 'I-don't-care-if-you-are-looking-at-me-or-not' kind of way. But there was of course one set of exceptions and that would be the 'lower echelons' of the production team of the TFI Friday TV crew that were in the city that night. We had the distinct pleasure to sit in a seat vacated by a few of their number and overheard the bitching and backbiting that went on. Soon after we stumbled into 'The Turk's Head' in Temple Bar which seemed to be really kicking. The live music by Aidan was good, getting some people dancing. The bar service was quicker than should be expected. We found out later from an unreliable source that it is a gay bar usually, which gives me an even better opinion of places renowned as such than I had before. Party Party Party.

Saturday saw us check out the shopping and the tattoo parlours. The design we wanted was a little complex to be done on the spot, so we have had to go back to the drawing board on that one, I'll keep you posted. We also checked out the bus tour, which was very good for a well rounded idea of the city. Stopped at The Book of Kells in Trinity College, amazing how they did Graphic Design over 1500 years ago, putting HTML coding into perspective. After stopping for Lunch in a local inn, we found out about a 'civic event' that was occurring that night in a place called Smithfields. This was where U2 were going to be given the 'Keys to the City of Dublin'. Being a long term and rather fanatical U2 fan I thought it would be a good idea to go along and see if I could get in. We found the location, a regenerated area of the city near an old whiskey distillery, but also found out that official tickets would be required. It turns out these tickets were free, but I had no idea where to source them from, other than pay £20 to a tout. I approached a small group of Irish people to enquire where they had got theirs from. After five words where exchanged I walked away with a beaming smile and two tickets. My intense thanks to the girl with the black hair and beautiful eyes who gave me them, my offer of a drink still stands at any time. The event was amazing, the band were given the keys and a Waterford Crystal Joshua Tree, which I have to say were totally hideous. I wonder how long they will stay on their respective mantlepieces? U2 played four tracks acoustically: 'All I want it You', 'Desire', 'One' and 'The Sweetest Thing'. Fantastic.

We Checked out the seaside town of Malahide on Sunday, where there is a good beach, a castle and a few shops. Most relaxing...

More about Buses
Feb 16, 2000

Say you want to get from Garratt Lane, Tooting, SW London to that meccca of rail based transport Clapham Junction.

That is all well and good, but my recommendation to you is not to use the G1 bus route. It takes a good hour, and most of that is spent looping in and around the suburban housing estates between Tooting and Clapham, taking in Battersea as well.

Best bet is catch any other bus on Garratt Lane to Earlsfield station and get a train. It will cost almost 3 times as much (£1.90 instead of 70p) but will only take 15 minutes

Just so as you know

Bus Running
Feb 16, 2000

I, for the first time today had to 'run' (if you can call it that) for a bus whilst sporting a delicious pair of brushed aluminium crutches (a left over after my recent motorcycle accident). How difficult is that? It was bad enough trying to catch the bus that appears at the end of the road and is nearer to the bus stop than you when you can actually support your own full weight on rapidly moving legs. But to attempt to move fast with arms and legs in synch. A nightmare.

I caught the bus, by the way. This was mainly thanks to a van who slowed it down and a queue of people at the bus stop.
