Posted Oct 18, 2002 by Whisky I don't know why no-ones started this thread yet but does anyone out there really believe that pop-up adverts on the internet actually do anything but annoy those people trying to use the web? And as for mass mailings trying to sell things... Has anyone ever, ever bought anything because they've received an e-mail from an anonymous source trying to sell them some junk?

Posted Oct 21, 2002 by PQ - possibly back bt internet are evil when it comes to pop up adds. We installed their broadband software and now everytime you shut down a webpage up pops about three others trying to sell you junk.
I'm surprised there isnt an internet version of the postal/fax/telephone preference service so that you can make it blatantly clear to people that you are not interested. I've ever found any merit in any website advertised using pop ups and I avoid websites who use pop ups to advertise (they will not get my money). I don't mind banner adverts as they are easy to filter out and can (occassionally) be for something that interests you.
I really dispise the adverts that look like windows though

Posted Oct 21, 2002 by Thought I should change my name back to 'Mina' to avoid confusion I've just started using Kazaa, and it has pop up ads. No problem I think to myself. I've got Opera, with built in pop up killer. But this program opens them in IE, which *really* makes me angry.

Posted Oct 21, 2002 by Fruitbat (Eric the) I think that banner adverts were all the rage for a while because they could be made to move....trouble is (for the advertiser), so few people clicked on them that they're really not worth the bother. Adult sites us JavaScript code to make a multititude of windows spring open, all of which are out of control and none of which close when wanted.
I've read recently that the funding model for webvertising, as it's known in some circles, is having to undergo a dramatic re-think....mostly because the advertisers have finally figured out that more people are annoyed by their adverts than attracted by them.
I find adverts on a web-site to be visually intrusive, even if all they do is flicker. I'd rather pay directly for something I thought was worth the bother than have adverts dictate the content of the site and my irritation level at not being able to shut them off.
