Plus, our government has more layers than an onion, and most of the layers don't know what the other layers are doing. yuk . And then there's the government secrecy issue.

Indeed. We have so many overlapping jurisdictions in the US that it must seem quite confusing for people from other countries.

I hear that India has some overlapping jurisdictions. yikes

One thing that concerns me is that gay marriage is allowed in about five states in the U.S. Are gay couples pretty much forced to stay in those states in order to keep what they have? sadface

My personal take on the whole gay marriage rights things is this. I think it all started probably because some business owners didn't want to have add same sex partners to their employee benefits package and recruited the religious zealots to fight the battle for them. "Let's not emphasize the monetary aspects of this, rather let's let a bunch of bible thumpers shout about how gay marriage threatens "traditional marriage." Whatever that means.

But yea, basically if gay or lesbian couple are legally married in a certain state, their rights aren't recognized in others. This can be quite sad in the case of a partner not being treated as a relative or dependent when the other is hospitalized or even dying.

Massachusetts has world-class medical facilities, so having one partner in an out-of-state hospital doesn't seem all that likely, though it's possible.

OK, so one more reason for you to envy us Krauts - "Federal law is above lower law" - no senile wighead here can be talked into telling you what to do and what not.

With such advantages, I wonder why my grandmother's ancestors left Germany to come to the U.S.

"Land of the Free", Paul - back then, America promised to offer freedom of thought. Something seems to have gone horribly wrong.

Uh, CZ? the 'whole gay marriage thing' started because gays and lesbians would like, very much, to be able to get married. It's for all the same reasons that straight people like to get married. it isn't about businessesÉit's about making a statement to the world that you want to be with this person for the rest of your life (blah blah blahÉjust like straight people).

Just saying.

Okay, sorry. That just set me off.

Uh, MR? I think CZ wasn't describing his own views on gay marriage, but those of employers keen on keeping their costs down.

Yea, I'm totally for it.

In the words of Kinky Friedman, "I believe they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us."

By the way, check out this kid.

That kid is more mature and answers questions better than his adult detractors.

So, is Kinky going to make another stab at politics?

Judging from his web site, he is running for governor of Texas in 2010.
