Posted Feb 18, 2003 by Mu Beta Just a little anecdote that this entry reminded me of...
Our physics teacher at school was a particularly wacky individual, with something of an oddball sense of humour (it was he who regularly sent notices to be broadcast on the school tannoy asking for 'Hugh Jampton'). He taught us all the left-hand rule, and then set an end-of-year exam question using it. As it was Question 1, he carefully devised it so that the movement of the coil would be upwards in the vertical axis of the paper. Therefore, the worried invigilators were confronted with a hall full of students, all with middle-fingers sticking out and pointing towards the ceiling.
