I thought Phillip Pullman made the place up. If you read his novel Northern lights he refers to the norther hemisphere as Svalbard.
The northern lights are The Aurora Borealis a beautiful and intoxicating site.

It definitely exists! I visited at the wrong time of year for the Northern lights, unfortunately.
