Posted Jun 14, 2003 by maddogcooney I believe the researcher is mistaken. The entry: "Whalers have often noted huge marks the size of dinnerplates on sperm whales who have been fighting octopi (the whales feed on deep-sea octopus)." is incorrect in that the sperm whales receive those marks from fighting giant squid (Architeuthis Clarkei) not octopuses.
There are several documented cases of human encounters with giant squid and many more reports of sperm whales with the markings. There are no repors of giant octopuses (Octopus dofleini) doing combat or leaving marks on sperm whales.

Posted Feb 20, 2007 by Mr. X---> "I really, really want Met to watch Pirates 3, but I'm totally not trying to pressure her in any way. Totally." Unfortunately, despite the eyewitness accounts and numerous bodies in fishing nets, no living Giant Squid has been caught on film.
