I believe the researcher is mistaken. The entry: "Whalers have often noted huge marks the size of dinnerplates on sperm whales who have been fighting octopi (the whales feed on deep-sea octopus)." is incorrect in that the sperm whales receive those marks from fighting giant squid (Architeuthis Clarkei) not octopuses.
There are several documented cases of human encounters with giant squid and many more reports of sperm whales with the markings. There are no repors of giant octopuses (Octopus dofleini) doing combat or leaving marks on sperm whales.

Unfortunately, despite the eyewitness accounts and numerous bodies in fishing nets, no living Giant Squid has been caught on film.

You'll find now that not only have giant squid been caught, so have the even meaner, scratchier and bigger colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni
