The American Version

What about the failed US version? While it may just be something my mind has invented to entertain me, I'm sure I recall talk of an American version starring Bill Cosby, except that it was completely re-written with a lot of the dark humour and original comic style adapted to fit a Cosby audience.

Hello
To be honest I knew about this US version, and I didn't mention it on pupose. Because I really don't want to get bogged down in my entries on TV programs by keep having to say "The US tried to make a version, changed most of it, took out all the originality and wondered why it didn't work".

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh, but that is how I feel.

Very wise - perhaps thos eof us who have written entries on sit-coms could come up with a standard Entry to link to.

"To learn more about the American version, click here"

which links to:

"The American Version - a Generic Explanation

The US tried to make a version, changed most of it, took out all the originality and wondered why it didn't work."

smiley

To be fair, we'll also have to mention "Brighton Belles" (which was the UK version of "The Golden Girls") and "The Upper Hand" (a reworking of "Who's The Boss" which actually ran for longer than the original).

I saw a few episodes of the Cosby version. It was The Cosby Show with better scripts.

Hello

Good idea, I might write that entry smiley

I will admit to not having seen the US version, but I did hear David Renwick comment that he wondered why they bothered buying it. And I remember seeing a program on the conversion of Men behaving badly to US voltage and I am not surprised it didn't work. They had all these network executives cutting out all the things that made it what it was (thank god the adaption of Absolutely Fabulous never happened).

I think thats why it only works one way, we take something, realise what it is and simply give it a UK context. They take something, and the usual 27 producers US series seem to have try and change it to there vision, network executives cut out anything they don't like (realistic sized homes, real money problems, reality, etc) and ask for audience pulling extra bits(car chases, violence, sex, etc), and then the censors bland it.

I couldn't agree more about Americanization of British Comedies, and I am American (Watertown, Massachusetts) We do a dreadful job of it. I've never understood why we don't just import the originals and let them stand on their own two feet.

ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE, which I have had the pleasure of viewing on our public (government-run)television stations, is incredibly funny, and Richard Wilson is tremendous. Annette Crosbie plays straight as well as anybody I can call to mind, giving Wilson a perfect partner to play off of.

The Cosby series bears almost no resemblance whatsoever to Renwick's masterpiece.
