Hi there.
I've never submitted a Guide Entry before, so please could you have a look if you have time and let me know what else needs to be done.
Thanks

Posted Feb 4, 2003 by aGirlCalledBen Looks good to me, but I am not a Professionals geek. (I am a professional geek, sometimes though!)
I think this is fine for the maelstrom that is Peer Review!

I'll be brave and submit it.

Posted Feb 4, 2003 by Whisky Yup, I can't see why this shouldn't head for Peer Review either... There are bound to be a couple of minor suggestions and improvements, but nothing major

Posted Feb 4, 2003 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] This is a good entry and well written.
Might it be an idea to provide a plot outline of one of the episodes to give a flavour for the sort of thing the show was about?
I don't like the title. I'd suggest you just call it "The Professionals - The TV Action Series".

Posted Feb 4, 2003 by Angelfeet, here for a fleeting visit Yes, I guess my original title is a bit flippant and misleading.
Perhaps if I did an outline of a generic episode without giving away the plot of a specfic episode? I'd hate to give away the ending for people who haven't seen it.

Posted Feb 5, 2003 by aGirlCalledBen Why not try that - and ask in PR if people like it or hate it? PR is a much busier forum, (which is a good thing and a bad thing).
Good luck with it

Most of your entry is identical to this web page http://www.ti5.de/sound.htm Can you confirm that you have permission to reproduce it here?
The curious thing about this page is that the text can't be seen In Opera I simply got a blank green page. In IE6 I also got a green page, but in parts of it the cursor turns to a text box I-bar. If I right click and run the mouse over that section I can highlight the content, which can also be seen in the page source code, and by hitting Ctrl-A.

Posted Feb 5, 2003 by aGirlCalledBen OOooops. That's a shame. The guide could do with an entry on this TV show if it doesn't already have one.
If you don't have the necessary permissions to reproduce it Angelfeet, then how about doing some more research and writing a new entry? As Tom Lehrer points out, if you use one person's work it is plagiarism, if you use several peoples' work it is resarch.
Something original, based on your own knowledge and what other people have said, (but not quoting them), would be good.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Angelfeet, here for a fleeting visit Hi there.
I have never seen that site before, so any plagiarism was completely unintended. I suppose there are only so many ways you can summarise a TV programme.
I've had an e-mail this morning to say that the entry's been removed, which is fair enough (though it's not the kind of birthday present I was hoping for! ). Maybe I'll write another entry sometime soon once I get my thesis out of the way.
Thanks for all your helpful comments, they were much appreciated.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] Angelfeet, since the other article on the web was word for word the same as yours in places, either you copied yours off them or they copied theirs off you. Or perhaps you both copied from another source. It couldn't have happened by accident.
Happy Birthday anyway.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Angelfeet, here for a fleeting visit I swear that I did not copy my text from anywhere. I used the external site I referenced to check my facts but was careful not to quote from it directly as I was worried about plagiarism. I wrote my entry about a year ago, so someone else could have seen it. I didn't submit it before as I got cold feet, then I was away from h2g2 working on my PhD thesis.
I know that I've got no proof that everything I wrote was written by me, but please believe me, I'm feeling really bad about this as it is.
I'm not complaining about having the article removed, though, that's fine by me. When I finally finish the thesis, I'll write an alternative entry.
And thanks for the birthday wishes.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Angelfeet, here for a fleeting visit I've just managed to get the text to appear on that website and I am absolutely _fuming_. They've pinched my entire article! Cheeky beggars. If it's any help, I can send the editors the Word document I wrote originally, which is be dated 5th Decemeber 2001, or I can ask deackie to vouch for me as a character reference since we've known each other for ten years or more. I've also e-mailed the owners of the site.
Ooh, I'm so cross.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] If you did write this, then I think you should be allowed to use it exactly as you wrote it. This is worth talking to the italics about. We're not talking about finding your text on some official web-site here, it's just on some German couple's home page, hidden behind a wall of green. And their version does look like it's been ripped from an English-speaking site, so all the evidence is in your favour!

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Angelfeet, here for a fleeting visit Hi Gnomon. Thanks for being so nice about this, I've been really down all morning about it. How do I go about taking my case before the italics?

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] I've posted your case to the Editors at the converation F47997?thread=245619. I hope that was the right place. You can hop over there and plead your case.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Whisky The best thing to do is simply to respond to the e-mail you got when the entry was removed... the date of creation of this entry co-incides with your word document (5th December 2001) and as it's the other copy is on a private website (which isn't even linked from their home page) I think you should get your version back
Don't Panic...

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Angelfeet, here for a fleeting visit Thanks Whisky. I'm feeling a little better now I know that I can fight my corner and that there are people on here willing to stand up for me even though we've never met before. I appreciate it.
I'm suffering from acute PhD stress at the moment, and the slightest thing is liable to send me into acute gloom!
I have replied to the e-mail I was sent this morning, so hopefully this can be sorted out.
Thanks again.

Posted Feb 6, 2003 by Smij In the short-term, if you follow the links from the main homepage - http://www.ti5.de/ - you can contact them and tell them they've plagiarised your entry.
The weird thing about Peer Review is you'd be surprised how much your original entry might change thanks to lots of helpful suggestions and additional research. While it means a little extra work on your part, it could also make it an even better entry, and simultaneously less likely to resemble this other site anyway.
Obviously, we have to look into this, but fingers crossed we'll be able to sort this out soon.
