Posted Nov 11, 2009 by TRiG (Ireland) Human rights under attack in Uganda. Look it up. Excellent coverage on the blog "Box Turtle Bulletin" I like the occasional long name, just now and again. Incidentally, what's the current limit? I know there is one.

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Spacecadette, just muddling through. "...but we'll live with it"
We'll just have to find some other way of showing our iconoclasticism.
I've got a serious question -- someone else uses my name, "Spacecadette", but uses a spelling which alternates caps and lower case. Will we both have to use "proper" titlecase, thereby insuring confusion? I was here first!

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by FordsTowel While I've only ever needed the 10 characters, I sympathise with those who wax more poetic.
But, maybe I'm missing something here. Has something actually changed? I never noticed!?

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Vip It's not changed yet, but when we switch there is a distinct possibility that we'll lose the extra characters.

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Ancient Brit At the end of the day you will best be identified by a 'U' Number. Try putting your U number in Google and see what comes up. We have a researcher U1046172 with a hopelessly long name that will no doubt be reduced to PAC or Prof for usage.
Put U1046172 into Google and we get :- http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=...sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=U1046172

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Gnomon [See A60420098 for details of new sign-in system] Spacecadette, I think either there will be no problem, or you will have to register with a different name. But only the Eds can tell us which.

It was possible to sign in once and link one to the other DNA sites but this no longer seems possible.

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Mina - Older on the outside, inside still 14 Nick,
It is tradition on h2g2 (a very LONG tradition) to use our names to publicise online events, entries we've written, real life meets, announce births and marriages (many which only happened because people MET on h2g2), and sadly, deaths within the community. There have been times I've only known someone has died through someone else's nickname. It also means the Eds will also know, through moderating names (if the Eds no longer moderate names then this won't be so valuable, but I'd hope that whoever does it would alert to RIPs etc of real life community members).
Often we'll use our names to announce that we've got entries on the Front Page, which I would hope would show the pride we show in getting our work there - which goes some way to encouraging others to help write the Guide, which is really why we're all still here.
It's also, through the years, been used by the staff as a guide to the 'mood' of the Community, what we're upset about, where there might be arguments going on, trouble of some kind, something the Eds have done so well we all want to sing about it. Obviously the team is much much smaller now, but the names can still alert the Eds to potential trouble spots which help to sort things out much quicker.
They are also used by the Eds (or have been in the past by the Community Team, not sure current Eds would have that habit) to draw attention to Talking Points, important news, or things they want the Community to pay attention to.
I hope you can see it's not just about me saying I still feel 14, others making rhymes or commenting on new things on h2g2 we're a bit scared of, what social groups we belong to etc.
I think that other social media (ie Windows Messenger, Facebook, etc) all allow us to change our status to reflect our moods shows that this is something valuable. WM even added a space for those long names because it was seen to be a good idea, and what people wanted. When I signed up that couldn't be done.
The BBC would once more be pushing h2g2 back into the past if it brings this in, and losing a valuable tool for the staff if we had our names shortened.

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Ancient Brit Titania That is how it used to work for me. Sign an once and go to any DNA driven site. For some reason I now have to sign in on each individual site although each one accepts the same sign in name and password.

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by BMT ( ST ) This may seem a silly question but does the 30 character limit include spaces? My name as written now, including the spaces, is 30 characters exactly, not counting the spaces makes it 25 characters long.

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by Nosebagbear (Nbb) my recollection (not perfect admittably ) is that spaces are the same as any character - just like a "_"

Posted Nov 12, 2009 by lanzababy - Pirate - Scout - adrift on life's ocean I would also like to endorse what Mina wrote. She has given a very clear explanation of why h2g2 should have a special case for allowing a tagline after the user name.
In answer to Shagbark, NickReynolds said he would look at this thread sometime today. (GMT) so within a few hours from now, I think you are five hours behind us Shagbark?
