I wish to know if there are regulations about which religion a Prime Minister must be or not be.
I know that Disrali was born Jewish and converted to Christianity before being elected, is it just chance that there had never been a Catholic Prime Minister, or is there a reason for this?

I don't know if there are any restrictions on religion. I suspect not, although there might well be some restriction. I am going to ask Askh2g2 page, as there might be someone there who knows.

I don't think there are any official restrictions on the PM's religon, although I think it was certainly the case that there was an informal 'keep catholics out of high office' thing going on. *Does a quick Google - ah, here it is* The Times did a interesting article on this a while ago. Have a look at http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/0,,248-2001590523,00.html .

The only restirction now to being Prime Minister is that they are a member of the House of Commons, there is no restriction to that as far a religion goes, there are Roman Catholic Ministers (Dr. John Reid, Northern Ireland Secretary of State), as well as Muslim, Hindu and Sikh members so there can therefore be no restriction on the religion of the PM bar the election of his party to be leader.

BTW the President of the Liberal Democrats Lord Dholakia is from a Hindu background.

MICHEAL HOWARD (THE LEADER OF THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY) IS JEWISH, SO WE MAY HAVE A JEWISH PM ONE DAY. I FIND IT QUITE FUNNY THAT THE FIRST WOMAN PM AND POSSIBLY THE FIRST JEWISH PM (DISRELI ASIDE)ARE MEMBERS OF THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY.

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPITAL LETTERS I AM AT WORK AND USE CAPITALS AND HAVEN'T REALISED THAT IT MAY BE UNACCEPTABLE!!tongueout
