This answer sent me literally scurrying to a cupboard full of books I have cos it rang a bell and lo! I have found a short story - "The Nostalgia Gene" by Roy Hutchins - a short story about a group of people who find they prefer the idea of life in "the old days" and invent a way of going back in time to live that. In the "old days" there is equally a group of people who are nostalgic - who have the gene for preferring life in the old days, and they use the technology to go back further - to cut a short story short, everyone who is alive is descended from a group of nostalgic time travellers, therefore we all have the nostalgia gene and prefer life in the past.
