Good suggestions - and they're all not it 
I've only got a few klaxons though, and nobody has tripped any yet. That's the good news.
The "Victorian mechanism" might be in the right direction, though...

 Well, that's as clear as mud, then...

Crushed by a threshing machine?
I don't know much about American agriculture... But I know threshing machines were lethal!
Did they have traction engines? Was the person crushed by one?

This reminds me of a bit of old stand up by David Baddiel where he makes fun of the causes of death listed in a "Bill of Mortality" (record of the causes of death within a Parish - each Parish had to keep one by law from 1538). The causes of death included "Planets", "Suddenly", "Distracted" and "Rising of the Lights" and of course plain old "Evil". And "Teeth". Of course they are only funny until they are explained but it amused me at the time.

But it's not any of those.
