Over 50 years ago, this topic of empty communication functioning as a "binder" for social groups was covered in depth by a noted sociologist/anthropologist named Branislaw Malinowski. He called the phenomenon "phatic communion." Anyone truly interested in this topic should read some of Malinwoski's theories and research on this -- particularly the concept of "communion."
