I've seen a car driving around in my hometown (a suburb of a suburb of Houston, Texas, USA) that I'm pretty sure is a Mini. It's sort of yellowish beige with wood trim - yup, a Mini Woodie, if there is such a thing. It really stands out even here in this coastal area with surfer stuff pretty common - old Beetles, VW buses, muscle cars. (The Texas you're thinking of, with tumbleweeds and dry plains, is somewhere else, El Paso maybe  )
The closest I've experienced is my '76 Chevy Nova, bought new and still running fine. The mechanic said if they still made those, they couldn't keep 'em on the lot. But I wish I'd never sold my Beetle

Sounds like you've seen a Mini Traveller. These still fetch a premium back in the UK over most of the other Mini models. I think its almost compulsory in the UK to have owned or had a family member who has owned a Mini. Me, I rue the day I sold my Mustang.

Not only compulsory to have owned a mini, you were supposed to have had when you were young and your dad had to be over 6' tall. Now I wonder how he ever got in it. Sad day when he sold it (reg nr: 370 XPE) for a fiver.

Sold for a fiver, sad. I drove an '82 Honda Accord hatchback 230,000 miles then ran out of duct tape. I DROVE it into the salvage yard, they paid me and "parked" it with a forklift (after returning my toll coins from the dashboard holder). A pretty good car  , as apparently the Mini's were (are).

Well, it was 1972 or 1973 so a fiver for a really old (first or second production run or something) mini was pretty good.
