| Posted May 12, 2001 by Orcus My thoughts are with Douglas' family at this moment, a terrible tragedy happened yesterday.
I concur with all that was written above but would like to add that I will remember him fondly, he brought laughter and happiness to millions with his work and that should be how we remember him. On h2g2 his legacy lives on, we will work to make h2g2 what he wanted it to be. Keep up the writing folks.

Posted May 12, 2001 by Spacecadette, just muddling through. My sincerest condolences go out to Douglas Adams' wife and daughter on their sudden and deep loss. I know it will not lessen their sorrow, but a very great number of people in the world share their sadness today.
I am thankful that Douglas' ideas and humor will survive him, so that even more people will get the chance to know him and the universe he created. So Long And Thanks For The Galaxy.

Posted May 12, 2001 by Curry-Kev I first read Hitch Hikers Guide when I was a teenager. It inspired me beyond belief, and encouraged me to start writing for myself. Your astonishing imagination and creativeness were a joy to behold.
Douglas...you are, and always shall be a unique inspiration to us all. Our thoughts go out to your family and loved ones at this time...we wish them only peace and love.
Long may your work inspire the minds of others, and encourage them to think freely and with tremendous humour.
Love; Light; Peace.

If a life is to be measured by time alone, then DNA`s was tragically and cruelly cut short. But if a life is to be measured by the amount that it enriched others then Douglas Adams lived one immeasurably longer than his years with us. His was a like that will not be seen again. I pay homage to his memory.

Posted May 12, 2001 by dimples Thank you DNA for being. Growing up in the conservative middle class of the midwest, your books gave me the courage to embrace being unique, irreverant and decidedly odd. It opened up my eyes to a whole different world than what I was used to.
I hope your family is comforted by the fact that you meant so much to so many people who never knew you personally.

Posted May 12, 2001 by Fairly Strange May I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences for the family and personal friends of Douglas Adams.
I was introduced to his wonderful tales of interstellar and time travel as a young man in my early 20's. I have never been much of a "literary" person.....and definitely not a lover of fiction. Douglas Adams found a chord in my soul that no other writer could discover.Thats' genius, in my mind.
May I say, his books have become a "standard" in my household. His memory will live on as long as there is a bookshelf in any of my familys' homes.
Thank you, Mr. Adams.

Posted May 12, 2001 by Mund I realise that I took DNA and his influence for granted. It wasn't just his ideas and his words, it was the ideas and words they bred in others. And now he's gone.
Love (with tears in my eyes) to him, his family and the extended family created by and around his inspiration,

Posted May 12, 2001 by Cakewalker Thankyou Douglas for hours of enjoyment and enlightenment - there are parts of your stories I know word for word, they've been listened to so often! The idea of putting some of those images into reality has surfaced often, even to the extent of envying any artist that would get the chance to work with the production team of any Hitch Hiker film there may be in the future. In retrospect I'm undecided as to whether that's such a good idea, though - the greatest writers conjure up images in anyone's mind, and there must be tens or hundreds of thousands of variations on the Hitch Hiker offices or Milliways the Restaurant at the End of the Universe amongst the people on h2g2, let alone the whole of Douglas's creation's avid fans, each one of which will be special to them. If, however, in a few years time, you come across a buiding in Sheffield that has a lift with a button that says 'please do not press this button again', you'll know why
