Posted May 12, 2001 by One-eye, KoD, gent, MuG, randomly available This is completely and utterly terrible..
Me deepest sympathies to his family and everyone that knew him, he must've been a natural center of attention.
His books have become kind of a way to identify similar-minded people, at least here in Norway where it isn't really that large. If you get talking with someone, you mention HHGTTG, they've read it, and you know you're on the same wavelength! So long, and thanks for all the way-too-late hours off reading in bed...

Posted May 12, 2001 by Researcher 173194 Cheers Douglas.
You have been a huge inspiration to me ever since I first read the guide. I know for certain that your work will continue to entertain everyone for years to come.
Take care of yourself. See you at the restaurant..

Posted May 12, 2001 by Mustapha I can't add much to what's already been said.
I used up pretty much everything I had on my own letter of condolence:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A546815
I won't ask people to repeat what they've already said here, but I offer the invitation for other researchers to add to it.
It would be nice if people could sign off with their real name and where they come from.
What more can I say? Douglas was my favourite author and his skill with language inspired me.

Posted May 12, 2001 by Researcher 173218 I remember the Guide being a sort of catalyst that brought together my friends in high school; it was a welcome antidote to many of our problems. Thanks Douglas, for helping to make me who I am. And thanks too for your conservation work, and for giving us a last chance to see that it's not too late to change our ways and make the world better.

Posted May 12, 2001 by Dr E Vibenstein (I should probably stop advertising Towel Day as it was six months ago.) I think you ought to know I'm feeling very depressed. Thank you Douglas, the universe is a sadder place today.
