I always thought that it was the Southerners who were unable to hear, let alone pronounce, the wide range of English vowel sounds [now referred to as Northern vowels] and were therefore forced to simplify them and drag them down to their own level. "What have they done to the language of ShaikespeeRR?" ... Brought it down to their own level?
