Rourke was a little wary of taking the part at first because his familiy had a history of alcohol related problems and did not want to upset them. Personally I think the casting of the part was good, but perhaps not the acting. Rourke looked like a drunken bum for most of his acting career anyway, so this give a good him start.
The part of the film with Bukowski sitting in the bar, typically of the drink was real. All the cast nearly lost their sight because they drunk so much![ well perhaps they just had a hangover the next day!!!!!.....opps i think the use of over three excalmation marks is the sign of a distressed mind ]
