The Harry Potter book series also includes mention of a phantom hound. The 'grim' is a giant black dog. Seeing it in a vision or during divination is considered to be an omen of death.

Miss Rowling evidently had some knowledge of the legends herself.
I was also interested to see that the guy who transforms into a big black dog is called Padfoot, even though he wasn't a phantom hound as such.

you could say hes a phantom hound because he isnt a true hound, but thats just my opinion
