"No, no, old chap! After you with the broadsword"
"Certainly not! Your spear head was her first, and besides, you're more senior than myself!"
"Too kind! Too kind! Please allow me to impale myself on your weapon to save you the effort of actually stabbing me"
"Oh, Sir! Such graciuosness! Would one care for a cup of tea and slice of madiera?"
"Many apologies! I seem to have left my intestines on your armour! Please allow me to lick it clean"
etc etc etc

Posted Dec 20, 2000 by HappyÐude® ... "short skirt long jacket" (have you seen my coxcomb?)...a ℘eripatetical entity You think you jest - but is was a period when warfare had very fixed rules, battles fought by mutual arrangment.

Posted Apr 9, 2002 by Researcher 192359 Thats the problem with this country, people sit on the fence and dont say what they mean or think.A Civil war would shock this country to the core.People go to war not only because of politics and land gain but also more importantly to win good over bad.Today ive watched Christians harp on about how good a person the Queens Mam was,I care to differ, and I also think Jesus was a revolutionary who was sickened by the rule of high walls and golden palaces. Some people bury their heads in books for their whole lives and will never understand some peoples desire for the rule of right.
Well that felt good anyway. Its amazing what a little hmm can do.

Posted Jan 8, 2003 by Hungry Joe I went to Maldon yesterday, where in AD 991 vikings mounted an attack on the locals from the island of Northey across the river Blackwater or as it was then called the Pant. The vikings being the cocksure young lads they were, asked to be allowed across the causeway from the island on account of it being only a couple of yards wide and therefore making them vulnerable to attack. The Brits, cricketers every one of them duly granted the Vikings request thereby giving away their otherwise easy victory.
"When the hated strangers saw and understood what bitter bridge-warders were brought against them there, they began to plead with craft, craving leave to fare over the ford and lead accross their footmen.
Then the earl was overswayed by his heart's arrogance to allow overmuch land to that loath nation: the men stood silent as Brighthelm's son called out over the cold water
'The ground is cleared for you: come quickly to us, gather to battle. God alone knows who shall carry the wielding of this waste ground.'"
From: The Battle of Maldon.
