OK, I'm back smiley
Sorry for the delay in replying I had a power-cut straight after sending you the email erm

You have shown a good grasp of the basis but that book makes me shudder at the thought of it as it is so out of date erm

I suggest you take a look at

http://www.w3schools.com/xhtml/default.asp
&
http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp

For some slightly more up to date advice on learning web design.

I've sent you an email containing a quick rework of your front page so that it uses the principles demonstrated in the above tutorials.

___

Also I suggest you get very friendly with the following two web pages

http://validator.w3.org/
&
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

You will find them of enormous help.

I think I'll save that thread for late-night-nothing-else-left-to-read readingwinkeye

So I should stop reading the book and tell Tom not to bother either? I'm not getting the more complicated stuff anyway. Heck, I didn't get how to do the links to the other pages on the server until I viewed the source at another sitelaugh I think the main reason I got as far as I have is that I'm used to putting tags around things--just need to learn the right tagswinkeye

As to your book, its like learning about car mechanics on a Ford Model T - you will learn the basic principles but if you the go and get a nice modern car you will be bleep when the electric ignition stops working.

I'd say try using it conjunction with the previous links, but in the end do as you feel best.

As for looking another site to see how links are done - we have all used the view-source button in moments of desperation winkeye

This next bit goes against the geek/nerd grain but Kompozer is a free WYSIWYG web authoring system that my niece likes and can be found at http://www.kompozer.net/

geek

Since it's a library book anyway, getting rid of it's no big dealwinkeye Like I said, I've gleaned what I can get out of it anyway. And I already went through and looked at all the cartoons that Dummies books havewinkeye

I think you know by now that I'm not a geek even if I am tech support (and now webmistress) for the householdlaugh And I'm sure that, even if I did worry about geek -cred, getting half the amount of sleep I need a night on average would be mitigating circumstanceswinkeye I assume Kompozer works with Linux? I went for the Linux server (tech support guy at GoDaddy said that the only real reason to use the Windows server is if you already had a site built with FrontPage)ok

Kompozer runs on your PC and produces web pages that should work with any web-server (regardless of operating system)

Tom liked the rework, and I definitely think I'll cheat and use a wysiwyg program, at least for now. *goes to download*
