| Posted Nov 11, 2009 by No, four Goshos. Goshos for forks Quoting, that is. Like this, for instance: F77636?thread=7070303&show=20&skip=20#p88348863
What's the point? Most of us here are intelligent enough to write a reply to a previous post, whether it be immediately adjacent or distant in the backlogue, in such a way that it answers a comment without cutting and pasting said comment, and when the quoted text is in the post directly above it just looks plain silly. It's not even necessary in fast-moving conversations. I gotta be honest with you, I find it intellectually lazy. It takes next to no time (but a little bit of thought) to compose a reply that addresses the comment in question, no more time than it does to cut and paste and put the comment in quotes, or chevrons, or any of the myriad other methods people use to indicate a previously stated comment.

You don't know just how much you have tempted me...
But I resisted (for once)

Posted Nov 13, 2009 by Mina - Older on the outside, inside still 14 I couldn't believe it when I started sending emails and my own emails were quoted back at me all the way through.
I used to have about a half a dozen penfriends, and although yes, occasionaly I'd read something and wonder what the hell the other person was talking about (as I'd forgotten what I'd written), I don't see the need to do it with emails. I can check my sent box!
Quoting the post immediately before does seem a bit overkill.

Posted Nov 13, 2009 by Count Zero I don't mind it (and I know I'm guilty of it) when it's a quote from a previous page or even 5 to 10 posts previous. Thread drift takes less than that so I appreciate the clarity it can provide. But yea, quoting from the previous post or even a couple of posts earlier is silly.
But I never gave it much thought, but since you mentioned it this afternoon I've seen glaring examples all day.

Posted Nov 13, 2009 by logicus tracticus philosophicus : a parasite of no consequence: yeah>>>I do wonder why this bit/link "This is a reply to this Posting" is not used more, bet many peoples don't even know its there, okay on many occasions your only taken to the last post but are some conversations where you can follow individual convo's in a thread

I rest my case. What is the point of quoting the entire previous post, minus a few words and two smileys?

Posted 5 Weeks Ago by coelacanth I do this. And I've seen it done. But it doesn't annoy me. I can think of 2 reasons for why I do it.
Sometimes it's helpful to remember the exact wording or phrase you're responding to. Yes, I could could have two windows open. Or delete the quote once the response is composed. But I don't.
But sometimes my response takes a while to compose - I like to take care. Or I get interrupted or distracted or make . Then I preview to check, and maybe change things. Eventually, when I do post my reply there's been others in between. So a quote makes my posting clear, without expecting anyone who reads it to have to look at the conversation tree.
