Durham Cathedral is not the only one who managed to mix up Can and Dec, Carlisle has the same problem.

By the way, I've just found this article, it's excellent.

In Carlisle I seem to remember it being due to the Bishop's Throne being on the wrong side of the Cathedral, therefore the dean had to sit on the other side,just to confuse things. Mind you, Carlisle Cathedral is a little bit strange anyway, there's no nave so it looks a little backwards.
