Can I ask your advice?
My budding artist son has just acquired a graphic tablet & needs to get some new (mac) software to get best use out of it. Is Photoshop as good as anything else?

I'll say. However it's expensive and you might like to look and see if Adobe have some other cheaper cut down versions.Or Jasc's Paint Shop Pro which is fantasic value for money. My daughter uses a MAC and seems to like those two as well although we tend to like the latter because it has a nifty little animation program that come packaged with PSP called Animation Shop.

There are lots of FREE graphics packages though if they work with Graphics tablets I'm not sure. The Gimp is highly spoken of and when I gave it a trial it was ok.I already had Photoshop so it seem pointless to use it instead.

For anyone contemplating photoshop though I recommend getting a very good book because you do need some help. The Wow books are very good and there are so many free video tutorials online(usually done in quicktime)That you can find some great help.

My daughter did introduce me to a nifty little art package recently called ArtRage which is for windows or mac.You can use a graphics tablet with it and it is a nice art package for a young person. It's very intuitive but it might not have enough depth for a teenager. It's good fun and you can download it from http://www.ambientdesign.com/artragedown.html It's good for anyone under 10 I reckon(and the young at heart)

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll pass the info on. He has some birthday money which he might be happy to spend if it's worthwhile - he's trying out a demo version of photoshop at the moment.

I haven't seen any results, but he says he's enjoying his new toy. Thinks he'll stick to the Gimp for the moment, or free trial software. Tends to hang on to his money!
