It should be noted that at some point in the more recent series' of the show Barney has managed to quit drinking and become a much cleaner and more upstanding citizen.
In the episode where he quits drinking he manages to save Bart and Lisa from a forest fire with a drunken Homer and a coupon for helicopter lessons for help.
(it was this, along with the taunting from Moe and the other occupants of Moe's Tavern which inspired Barney to quit drinking in the first place.)
Also the characters of Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure no longer appear in the show because the actor who provided their voices was murdered by his wife.
