| Posted Jan 7, 2007 by childoftheseventies What a brilliant article.. Very informative. . Also, you got the latinized version of Linneus' name right (which is probably more than I have, not sure I spelled it correctly). It's surprising how many people manage to mix up his native Swedish name with the latin version. Didn't realise the 'Von' part was added before he 'went Latin' with his name, though.. You learn something new every day. Sorry, It's probably incredibly sad of me to point it out, but credit where credit's due..
From another, less pedantic, point of view, it's really interesting to note the species of wildlife we have in this country and the impact us humans have on it.
Once again, thank you for an excellent and thought-provoking entry.

Posted Jan 19, 2007 by Rich [?] Well, thank you very much
I'm glad someone else is a pedant about Linnaeus's name, too - it's a bugbear of mine, and as many sources seem to get it wrong as right! So I don't find that sad at all to be honest, though that might make me sad too
Glad you enjoyed it, and thats for popping in to say so!

Posted Jan 21, 2007 by childoftheseventies You're very welcome! Would you believe it, even the Natural History Museum website got it wrong!! . What hope is there when an institution like the NHM doesn't know how to latinize properly?! Still, at least we know what's what!

Posted Jan 21, 2007 by childoftheseventies p.p.s. I suddenly realised this makes me sound pompous and as if I think I'm a world expert on Latin, which I definitely am not, by any stretch of my too vivid imagination.. It's just that I got so excited that someone gave Linnaeus his correct latin name for once I got far too carried away!!! Sorry! Childoftheseventies.

Posted Jan 23, 2007 by Rich [?] So what brought you to read about mammals anyway? It wasn't just good spelling, I presume

nope! I think it was just a love of nature.. That and the fact I'm a mammal too, I suppose.. I think I've always been interested in the diversity of life on this planet.. Being British, it was interesting also to see exactly what species were 'native' and which were not.. It's amazing what you can learn.. .

Posted Jan 23, 2007 by Rich [?] I'm glad you read it and found time to pop over and comment, then! I often wonder how often Entries get read and what people think of them, so getting a few comments back made my day That project in particular took an immense amount of work and research, so I'm really chuffed that you made the effort to say so. Mind if I add you to my Friends List?
