The main problem with Afghanistan is that the Afghans are so tough they make Chuck Norris nervous. Always have been. They've simply worn out everyone who's come their way from Alexander the Great onwards.

"the war was won and instead of winning the peace, everything was put on hold while we destroyed iraq, now we turn back to afganistan and the taliban have regrouped and reorganized" -- Taff

That hits the nail on the head. Bush and Cheney were so twitchy to get at Iraq and right Bush 41's rep, they didn't give a damn about staying on top of the Taliban. I believe they are so firmed entrenched, that we are seeing the start of WWIII, with 20 other nations supplying troops to that war. sadface

Did Obama use the word "win" in reference to Afghanistan? I came away with the impression that he was trying to move away from that kind of terminology and spoke more of a "successful resolution". But I didn't read the speech, so may have missed a word here and there.

It's a small but huge difference.

True, d'E, but that successful resolution won't come during his presidency. Obama only set a date to *begin* to withdraw our troops. Who knows how long we'll actually be in Afghanistan?

And I heartily agree, Taff. Cheney and Co. LLC screwed up. They're responsible for this current mess. As much as I hated the previous administration, I think we've gotta move on. Yes, by all means place blame, but we have go forward from here with a new strategy.

30,000 more troops ain't it.

A good start would be giving mucho dinero to the Central Asia Institute (founder Greg Mortenson is a local boy from Bozeman, Montana) and/or officially emulating their mission in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Plus there's the complexity that a lot of the fighting in Afganistan is in no way related to Taleban but rather is a question of local tribes resenting anyone - foreigners, the country's government, other Afghans, you name it - meddling in their affairs. So the counterpart (as I didn't wasnt to put "enemy") is a very fragmented lot.
