In terms of endorsement of Esperanto, Harry Harrison (author of the Bill the Galactic Hero series and the Stainless Steel Rat series) made Esperanto the universal language of his Stainless Steel Rat books. It's been a few years, but, as I recall, _A Stainless Steel Rat is Born_ even includes a few basic pointers on the language. I recommend both of these book series, by the way, as well as another book he wrote, _A Rebel in Time_.

Further science-fiction Esperanto links include the British show "Red Dwarf" and the "Riverworld" book series by Philip Jose-Farmer.
