Lord of the Rings parallels

When young I would have put this book a close 2nd behinf the Lord of the Rings.

Looking back now, I guess it was because both are of similar structure: Both are epic quests, with heroes and villians, both feature invented languages and detailled backgrounds which are touched on in stories and/or songs.
