Posted Jan 23, 2000 by mature student I've got a lovely allotment. It's still a bit overgrown in places, but I escape there regularly in times of stress. I have planned the seed sowing routine for the year, and have got plenty of seed potatoes sprouting in the spare room. My shed is leaning slightly, and the greenhouse has lost it's polythene cover, but all will be ready for the springtime. I'm not one of the older allotment holders, just an ageing English housewife. My father was a real gardener. He knew more than I shall ever learn about gardening. However, he used chemicals, which at the time must have seemed an advantage. I prefer to do battle with the bugs without the chemical weapons. It is not the easy option, but I like the taste. Potatoes, especially Home Guard, can easily be spoiled by artificial fertilisers. I hope my compost heap provides enough nourishment for this year. Last years potatoes are nearly used up now, only sprouts and cabbage left, with sprouting broccoli nearly ready. Looking forward to the harvest.
