Posted Dec 26, 2005 by Crash - Everyone's favorite Bull in a China Shop It seems only fitting today to take a look at the guide Entry on Boxing Day. After all, I must know what I am celebrating .
I thought the point of boxing day was for those who got new things to box up and give away the old ones. In so doing, they made room in their home for the new 52" plasma TV and gave a less fortunate family their 27" cable ready, S-video input, "obsolete" CRT TV. Traditionally, those who received the used TV were thankful that someone had been kind enough to give it to them and they, in turn, would set up the 27" TV in their living room and pass on their 13" TV... The same sharing of gain could be seen with other such useful items as clothing, cutlery, cooking utensils, etc.
This is why Boxing Day never caught on in the US. No matter how poor or even criminal anyone in the US is, they feel entitled to a brand new, top of the line, best that was ever made TV with a DVD player and at least 100 chanels of cable. There are mandatory taxes on cable service to ensure the poor are not discriminated aginst by having to pay full price for their cable and prisoners have successfully sued for the "right" to cable TV with movie chanels in prison .
