Researchers in Beijing

Hi
Trillian's Child told me you might be in Beijing at the moment so I thought I'd drop by your space and say hello.
My husband's working here for at least the next six months and I'm over visiting him just now.
Perhaps, if you're not too busy, we could meet for a cup of tea or something?

Alas, I am imprisoned in Hong Kong, I would love to dash up for a long weekendm but the Chinese govt isn't giving any of us visas at the moment and my multiple entry has run out.
Glad to see you're investing in the minbus tours. Sometimes you really get lucky with the guide. Over the years we've been treated to some very earnest students from the school of tourism and some amazingly ignorant fellow tourists.
The only cloisonne my family allowed me to buy was Christmas tree ornaments and they would have been cheaper at the factory.
Go out to the Drum and Bell towers. At one of them a tea ceremony is included in the price of the ticket.I fell for a teaset there in which the dragons change colour when you pour hot water into the cups and it wasn't anything like as expensive as the one you were looking at.They have an enormous selection of more conventional things and you can easily walk away without buying if they've put up their prices for the Olympics.(Warning, steep stairs and no lifts)We did this by taxi and then walked back along the side of a lake.
It's worth going to a tea ceremony and buying a set for the hours of hilarity when you try to reproduce the effect for family and friends at home.
Markets in general are much more fun than shopping malls, but I think you need a companion for those. Good luck and I hope you continue to enjoy it. star star

Ah well - perhaps we'll get a chance to meet up one of these days smiley

I've read about the Drum and Bell towers. It sounds very interesting - but Mr T is unlikely to cope with steep stairs at the moment so perhaps we'll do that visit next time I'm out here.

We're just about to head off to the Summer Palace. J's slightly peeved that I've seen more sights in the last week than he's seen in two months so we're slowly rectifying the balance.

Have a good weekend.

I did indeed enjoy China sigh

Bought a load of lovely wee cloisonne trinkets and tree decorations in one of the less posh department stores in Wanfujing. They were very reasonably priced - especially when one thinks how labour intensive their construction is.

Another thing I bought on that expedition was a packet of Jasmine tea balls. Can't say I performed the proper tea ritual last night when I got back to the UK - but I wowed Ma with the unfurling of the ball into a beautiful flower cool

I'm hoping to go back in the Autumn with one of my daughters so will have company for trawling the proper markets - and intend to seek out the perfect tea set. I saw some lovely ones in the high-end department stores but they seemed more than a tad expensive.
