Posted Oct 19, 2005 by Zarquon's Singing Fish! Good to see this entry.
My first meeting was completely silent, which at the time was just what I needed.
My meeting is very inclusive. We have taken into membership someone who doesn't believe in God, and a witch, and both have contributed to the life of the meeting.
When an elderly member (now deceased) became unable to make meetings, we had regular 'meetings for imbibement' at the pub (I didn't attend, although I approved the principle). Our meeting has had special meetings about gay relationships and discussions about blessing them.
I attended a funeral, which was a beautiful occasion and I sang. Totally different to any other funeral I have ever been to. People present stood and ministered just as in the ordinary meetings about this extraordinary man.
It would have been good to have mentioned the Quaker Nobel Peace Prize: http://www2.gol.com/users/quakers/nobel_prize_speech.htm

Posted Oct 20, 2005 by jhutcher I thought by the very nature of quakerism that any mention of the noble peace prize would be unwarranted. you don't see it flashed about the place... Its not really part of quakerism but rather a by-product.
I'm glad your've added some examples in the convosation about the types of people quakers are willing to accept into the spirtual fold.

Posted Oct 20, 2005 by Zarquon's Singing Fish! For the section 'What Quakers believe', there is of course the Red Book 'Quaker Faith & Practice': http://quakersfp.live.poptech.coop/qfp/
To a Quaker, no time, place, action or person is more - or less - special or holy than any other. There's a nice section on quaker celebrations here: http://www.quaker.org.uk/templates/...deid=90267&int5thparentnodeid=90270
Something else about quakers is the different language. For instance, we had a 'meeting for clearness' about a particular issue rather than for clarity.
Quaker meetings are also great at supporting children and there are special residential weekends for children. There are also quaker schools.

Posted Dec 23, 2005 by Asteroid Lil I'm currently undergoing meetings for clearness to formalize my membership in the Albuquerque Monthly Meeting. The times that I have attended ABQ I found them surprisingly vocal! Back home in the Bonito Valley Worship Group, we have yet to have anyone speak (we've been meeting for about 3 years now).

Posted Jan 4, 2006 by Zarquon's Singing Fish! My first meeting was totally silent, which was really nice. They can be very different, the one from the other. Some are quite vocal, some silent, some with just a few people ministering. There's an amazing divergence of views on some issues.
