I agree that there are some programmes that stand out however my point is that these are gems - little islands of high quality science broadcasting in a sea of mediocrity.

True that. It'll be sad if broadcasters give up completely on the smarter audience segment and only feed pablum to the dumber part. But already some science programming is showing up now on Youtube and iTunes. Obviously there's demand for science programming, how else can we explain the NASA channel?

Yes, I agree. The Andrew Wiles/Fermat's Last Theorem programme was EXCELLENT. I think it was part of the BBC Horizon series erm . Never thought I'd ever watch a maths programme that would make me wah - but I did with that one as I really empathised with the emotions Wiles went through when he firstly thought he';d solved the problem, then realised he hadn't and then finally arrived at the solution biggrin .

Watched Horizon on Tuesday - about Black Holes. Again an entertaining and informative programme. Decided the Edited Entry in the Guide probably needs updating 2cents .

The Black Holes one wasn't bad, even though they seemed eager to spend a fair bit of time&money going to various locations for no obvious reason, and they *way* overdid the moody/shadowy lighting thing.

However, they *did* seem to get away from the drearily predictable format of recent years where they introduce some Good Idea, then imply it's all going to Fall Apart, and eventually get to some sort of resolution by programme's end, which can only be a good thing if they keep it up.

I'm rather enjoying the The Universe from the History Channel, currently on Disc 2, The Inner Planets: Mercury & Venus.
