Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain. Yes years of physics teachers telling us this in order to learn something we had know from childhood...oh well they had to do something to earn their saleries.
P.S Rainbows are one of the most beautiful things.

If rainbows are the most beautiful thing in the sky, does that not make them also the most beautiful things in the world, since the world (at least this earth ) is in the sky? rocket

Welcome to the wonder that is h2g2, Flamebezooomy. Perhaps some day we will understand your posts. I was over at A2848386 (Dark Side of the Moon) and saw your comment on that, but . . . couldn't read it all.

The most beautiful thing in the world

It's true. One of my first ever memories was of seeing a very bright rainbow against a very dark grey sky. I must have been 2 or 3 years old. I was told it was a rainbow, but remember being totally transfixed by the sight, and remember it even now. Even at that age I knew it was something very special.

I think a nice part of the magic about is is how we perceive it, and that it has such a contrast of the bright colours against the grey wet sky. Did you ever notice that the sky under the rainbow is generally a lighter grey than the sky above it?

And did anyone ever find that pot of gold? I'm sure I got very close once...

I remember seeing on the net, 4 or 5 years ago a picture of an upside down rainbow. It was fabulous. Created by the sun being reflected from the still waters of a Scottish Loch, hitting suitable rain and then someone took the photograph.
I have since searched for this photograph several times but always failed to find it. I will have further searches because it was so unusual and impressive. If anyone else finds it....please let us know.

Rainbow mnemonic

this is the memory trick my father was taught at school (he was born in 1933):-

Run off you boys, girls in view

I was taught
Richard of York gained battle in vain

(even though I didn't know who the `eck he was).

There's a website called Rainbow Mountain Chat (put these words in the search-engine and it should come top)-
a lot of spiritual type topics, and if you type RAINBOW, each letter has a different colour. It looks lovely.
(I'm `Goldilocks` there, by the way.)

I didn't know any Richard of York when I was seven or eight. Needless to say, I've come across a few since then.

You could say Riddle Of Yeti, Giant Body In Valley, or Reel Of Yoyo Gets Basted In Vaseline, or Rabid Or Yelling, Grisly Bears Invite Vivisection, or Respectable Old Yemeni Goes Berserk In Vienna or . . . rainbow

I generally go the other way: Violet Indigo Blue Green Yellow Orange Red rainbow

Hmmm . . . Very Important Businessman Gets Yanked Off Railway? rainbow
