I had a lovely brass knocker on the door to my house, a lion with a ring through it's nose. Having downsized and bought an apartment (condominium as we call them here) I wondered if it would be appropriate to have a knocker on my present door. I found out that not only was it not allowed by the Strata Council but my neighbour felt it would be a bit ostentatious. I still wonder why.
