Highway to Hell - AC/DC is definitely going to be played at my funeral.

Think I'll ditch 'Sympathy for the Devil' and replace it with:
"Whistlin' Past The Graveyard" - Tom Waits. After all, it is my funeral. whistle

@Mrs Zen:

I suppose 'Spam and Onions' and 'What Larks!' are fine if you have an abbey booked. I was assuming a local council in-out job.

Abbey, schabbey.

I rather liked Jeremy Hardy's comment that he wanted to be scattered when he died. Not cremated. Just scattered.

Ed, I love this thread, (loving Max Romeo & The Beta Band btw) but there are too many to choose from at the minute. Currently, my songs are:

Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása - Sigur Rós
Finished Symphony (Soundtrack Edit) - Hybrid - (the orchestral version)
Duel - Propaganda
Whistlin' Past the Graveyard - Tom Waits

Although Rudest Elf (you wee devil ye) had changed to this last song, this is the only definite on my list - the rest are subject to change with time & events. But I do wonder how the minister is going to take

musicalnote ...a mean mother-hubbard...musicalnote erm biggrin

Interesting thread, this. My choice of funeral songs varies from moment to moment, not just from time to time, so this is what I've come up with right now.

I think it would be fun to start with This Mortal Coil's 'Another Day' - spookily charming lyrics by Elizabeth Fraser.

At some point during the show there will be something by Lisa Gerrard - either in Dead Can Dance or solo, it doesn't really matter - and as she doesn't sing in any known language it doesn't really matter which track as long as there's lots of spooky low deep notes sustained longer than one would think possible.

Then I quite fancy Arvo Pärt's Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten. geek Three strands of music all coming to a final point of unity as a bell slowly chimes... If that doesn't get people in the mood, I don't know what will.

And finally - Wuthering Heights, as done by the Puppini Sisters, for no good reason except that it's light and a little silly, but still sung from the point of view of a ghost. cool

<aside>

Ivan meant This Mortal Coil's cover of Roy Harper's 'Another Day'. It was also covered by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel in a TV special.

Hmm. Speaking of This Mortal Coil...If my Beta Band choice weren't so perfect as outro music ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsbR2dEmHGc especially 4:10ish onwards), then my choice would have been a cover of a This Mortal Coil cover of a Tim Buckley:

Very silly .

The only one I'm sure of is Gershwin's "I'll build a stairway to paradise", but I shall consider a few more options.

Love that fireworks idea, Ben, put me down (er...up...) for one of those! rocket

I want my ashes scattered on Felixstowe beach. Hopefully they won't end up like Donny's at the end of The Big Lebowski.

How and where to scatter ashes can be quite tricky.

Not far from my late parents' home village there is a mountain with an old and rather well known ski resort. Quite a lot of people visiting that area during life expresses a wish to have their ashes spread from the top of that mountain, and usually permission is granted. However, the inhabitants of the valley below are less amused of having their laundry, bushes etc. covered with somebody's ashes...

They should just count themselves lucky they don't live in Runcorn.

erm Mind you...so should we all. Apart from any of us who *do* live in Runcorn, obviously.

Can only think of one I'd really like.

"Tonight We Fly" (though it MUST be the live version) by The Divine Comedy. If those last few lines don't send shivers.....

I think my first two selections were a too frivolous for such a sad occasion, so I'll replace them with:

Long Shot Kick de Bucket - The Pioneers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyeG5Vp5j00&feature=related

Rudy's Dead - Little Grants and Eddie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_38VyfE2Ng
