However I have heard in recent years from people online that finding a poppy seller or anywhere that has a poppy appeal box can be hard.
So can I suggest if you cannot find one try the online British Legion Website where you can donate online..

Posted Oct 23, 2009 by Dr Zen now with PhD Funding. Would probably buy them. I was really annoyed on breakfast news as their was a genric blonde singer who was going on about how she was so pro our brave boys, and that she had gone out to Afganistan to 'Support the troops'.
Now their are plenty of ways a woman can contribute to the Army - in fact I believe they do nearly all roles apart from the front line one.
But being a blonde bimbo and singing is just really insulting to all the service women.

I'm happy to give cash to the poppy appeal, and to the collectors, but I don't feel the need to 'show my appreciation' by wearing a poppy.

Posted Oct 23, 2009 by anhaga Yes, I will wear one. But the one I wear will be one I made myself out of polymer clay. The ones we get from the Canadian Legion are too easily lost and have annoyingly sharp pins. In some past years they've also had poppy stickers, but that just doesn't seem right.
I will, of course, make a point of dropping a toonie or two into the Legion's kettle in the mall.

For those who want a poppy it sometimes worth checking out Post Offices and libraries and any 'official' building such as the Town Hall and see if they have a box.

Posted Oct 23, 2009 by Wand'rin star A dear friend, who normally collects in the village square for the legion, is very ill at present. I'm trying to find out if he wants a substitute for a couple of hours. haven't seen a nyone wearing one yet. Perhaps it's because Dennis is ill.

The poppy appeal has only just 'officially' opened.Your friend may well be on the case soon but it would be nice if you did offer.I often enjoy the times when I'm been asked to step in and I'm always impressed by the generosity of the British Public.

Yes! Why is that. For years they`ve been using a particularly thin and pointy pin that is damn near impossible to guide through a thick jacket without stabbing a finger or thumb or both.
And they are so thin they have no friction to hold the black center tightly on the red poppy flower bit. Too thin to keep the whole unit safely stuck to clothing and the pinheads are so small they do not restrain the flower from falling off, leaving the pin imbedded in thick jacket material and hard to get hold of without drawing blood.
Is that it. The blood. They can have my money but not my blood!

I will be wearing a donating and wearing poppy. I was reading some articles on "Poppy Fascism" I didn't recall hearing the term before so did search for it. I fully support Jon Snow in refusing to wear the symbols of any cause, even one that he supports in his private life. Good man.

May I ask why?
I ask as my husband has worked on the local branch Poppy Appeal committee of the Royal British Legion for many years and I know that they do very good work with the money that they raise..
The only remotely political thing they do is campaign for better conditions and treatment for both serving and ex servicemen.

Posted Oct 24, 2009 by Roymondo: no protests to pimp. It's getting too chilly for all that malarky. Actually, I'm not sure. Was a tad drunk when I wrote that. My Dad used to work for them and thought they were a pretty wasteful organisation. It was probably something to do with that.

Posted Oct 29, 2009 by swl I always thought that wearing a poppy wasn't so much about supporting an organisation, but a mark of respect for all those, from all nations, who have died fighting wars. It's the most poignant anti-war symbol ever.
