I accidently hit on a good way to do it. Take their date of birth, then go back before it by their age, and recount the events of that 'equidistant' time. Try it - you'll find they seem really ancient.
So - the Weddell's birth was closer to the outbreak of WWI than it is to the present day 
Trouble is...in my own Time-Mirror the Titanic is out looking for an iceberg 
You guys got any good ones?
