Who owns the copyright on h2g2 articles? Wikipedia is clearly 'copyleft' which is about as subversive of traditional ideas about intellectual property as it gets...

In brief: Each Researcher owns the copyright to what he or she writes, but, by posting it, authorizes the BBC to use it on h2g2 and elsewhere.

In not quite so brief, here's what the FAQ says (from A308251):

"It's important to note that you still own the copyright to everything you contribute to h2g2. This means you are perfectly free to take what you have written and re-publish it somewhere else.

"When you contribute to h2g2 you grant us (among other things) a non-exclusive right to publish your work in any media; see the Terms and Conditions for the full terms of our rights. As we may wish to distribute the Guide in various formats in the coming years, we need to be sure that we have the right to publish everything that's on h2g2."

I think all of these sites would be better if they had a simple mechanism for making each post Copyleft, and encouraged users to choose Copyleft for all posts.
