Hi there, smiley

hmm, interesting point, I don't know to what extent they imposed the new calendar on newly invaded regions/states...

as for birthdays! I hadn't thought of that at all, yikes Although, as I think about it now, I suspect most people probably didn't celebrate birthdays in the way we think of as 'universal' today.

The whole thing must've confused the hell out of 90% of the population, anyhoo

Dealing with double calendars is not a problem - Israel has been doing this for ages.
Officialy, we use the Jewish calendar as well as the Gregorian, and all formal documents (like government papers and such) must carry the Jewish date; and of course, the Jewish holidays are also by the Jewish calendar. In reality, most people that aren't religious use only the Gregorian calendar and wouldn't have any idea what Jewish month it is unless they'd check their diaries.
But still, the two calendars exist, side by side. So I actually have two birthdays each year smiley .

Happy new year 5765 everybody!

Oh, and in case you were wondering about the Jewish calendar, here's a very cool converter for _lots_ of calendars (not the revolutionary one, unfortunately): http://bennyhills.fortunecity.com/elfman/454/calindex.html#TOP

erm No, not really... the two calendars exist side by side. So this year, for instance, I'll be 22, and then three days later I'll be 22 again.

I don't understand how your birthday is 3 days later...It's still the same day every year in the solar calender...25th august 1977 (my gregorian birthday) is 11 / Elul / 5737 AM in the Jewish calender. The year may be different so the following year it will not fall on the 11 Elul. You have to set one calender as your birthday then date will change in the others but it'll always be the same actual solar day...I think...I'm totally confused! biggrin

erm What's the problem? You have the Gregorian birthday, and the Hebrew birthday. They hardly ever fall on the same day - about once every 19 years, and even then not always.

If you don't think about it too much, it works out. winkeye
