Posted Apr 24, 2007 by laylahussain I am a brand new subscriber, and I would like to have more conversations related to toastmasters which I am a member in one. Fortunately, for English speakers I believe that public speaking is very easy than for non English speakers, as for me, I get difficulities to come up with the right words specially when it comes to Improptu speeches! For the last 15 months I have delivered four speeches only! yet, I cannot stand by the audience to deliver the fifth! The more I attend toastmasters' meetings the more I lose confidence...

Posted Apr 24, 2007 by Woodpigeon (blasphemy now illegal in Ireland. It is 2010 after all) Hi laylahussein,
Thanks for your comment. Well done too for writing and delivering 4 speeches. That's excellent work! I understand where you are coming from. Are you currently based in an English speaking country?
I guess the difficulty with all public speaking is that there is only one real way to get good at it, and that's practice. I also find that different people have different abilities, so there's no one ideal public speaker, you develop skills you are good at and comfortable with. Try to think more about what you do well in your speaking, and build on that.
I have to admit that I am not great for impromptu speaking myself. I am an introvert, so speaking off the cuff is not one of my best abilities, and many times I have been left gasping for air when asked to speak on something I know little about. Usually it's a case of repeating the question or telling people that you must have done something really bad in a past life to be asked a question like that, while your brain works away on trying to give a coherent answer!
